KMTL expands testing services

  KMTL has enhanced testing services further to respond to various needs received from customers. Topics are described below.

1. Strategic partnership with Cetim, French mechanical expertise center

  In all industries including aerospace and automobile, international collaboration has increased rapidly in the trend of globalization.

  On March 1, 2017, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan (METI) signed an agreement with French government, announcing the policy that the Japanese government will provide support to strengthen the cooperation between Airbus and the Japanese industry. According to the government policy to increase businesses with Airbus, KMTL signed the partnership with Cetim on July 19, 2017. Cetim is the leading French research institute in mechanical engineering and has close relationship with Airbus.

  As a first step in our collaborative development overseas, Cetim and KMTL jointly exhibited in an exhibition in Korea, where we held the signing ceremony for the strategic partnership on November 1, 2017.

　

2. Nadcap accreditation to NMMT-Mechanical Testing as the first laboratory in Japan
  Nadcap is the worldwide special-process accreditation program of the aerospace and defense industries administered by PRI (Performance Review Institute), a US non-profit US organization. Major companies including Boeing, Airbus, GE, Rolls Royce participate in PRI.

  On July 13, 2006, we were accredited to Nadcap as the first laboratory in Japan for Material Testing Laboratories (MTL), one of the 19 programs that comprises Nadcap. In 2017, KMTL obtained the accreditation for Non Metallic Materials Testing (NMMT) – Mechanical Testing also as the first laboratory in Japan accredited to this type of testing.

  With the Nadcap accreditations to MTL and NMMT, tests for most of the aircraft structure components are now available at our facilities.

　

3. Introduction of a large scale fatigue testing machine with 1000-ton capacity
  In addition to international collaboration and accreditation, our testing facilities have been enhanced.

  Specifically, our new workshop in Hitachi-city, Ibaraki, has introduced a 1000-ton large-scale fatigue testing machine, which was onerously transferred by Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI).

  Fatigue testing machines are machines that externally apply small cyclic load to metallic and other materials to measure their life. Data obtained by fatigue testing are used for designing structural materials. Normal fatigue machines are mostly with a capacity of 10 tons, and only several 1000-ton class machines are said to be used in Japan.

  Our range of services including structure-material strength simulation using CAE software, you will be able to compare and analyze evaluation results from the simulation and actual testing of an actual product. This will provide a series of solutions that will increase design accuracy for the product.

  This machine has started its operation in September, 2017 in our new facility in Ibaraki. We will respond to various customer needs as a total testing/analysis laboratory that covers from a 1-mm size miniature specimen to testing of actual large components.

　

4. In closing
  KMTL celebrated the 70th anniversary this year. Since the foundation, we have provided various services to establish credibility with companies leading each industry as the first domestic independent laboratory in Japan.
  With the organized quality assurance system, we will continue to provide test results that are internationally acceptable. By certifying the products of Japanese companies dealing with international aircraft and automotive manufacturers, we will support Japanese manufacturing technology to appeal to customers worldwide.
