Test Standards

Kobe Material Testing Laboratory Group (KMTL) has been contributing to various industrial fields through testing services. The fields ranging from industrial material, marine craft and thermal/nuclear power to aerospace and medicine, we are familiar with the testing standards required for each area to respond to various customer needs. KMTL was first accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 testing laboratory standard in 1998, to Nadcap in 2006 as the first material testing laboratory in Japan, and to GE Special Process Specification S-400 in 2008 (material testing).

Under the world-recognized and sophisticated quality assurance system, we provide integrated services from test planning to testing and evaluation based on international and domestic testing standards with high level of confidence from customers. Examples of representative testing standards we use in our main four fields (aerospace, energy, automobile, and medicine) are shown below.

Aerospace

Outline of testing

Components Engine parts; Airframe structures (fuselage, wing, empennage and other)
Purpose New material development; Functional evaluation; Durability evaluation; Composite material characterization
Material Special steel; Super alloy; Titanium alloy; Aluminum alloy; Plastic; Composites

Focusing on aerospace, KMTL obtained Nadcap (MTL) accreditation in 2006 subsequent to JIS Q 9100 certification in 2005. State-of-the-art materials used for aerospace products require that customers including Nadcap Primes strictly comply with the quality standards. In this situation, they place high confidence in our testing according to ASTM standards.

Nuclear and thermal power plants are designed and developed in conformity with nuclear standards such as ASME (the American Society of Mechanical Engineers) and RCC-M (French Nuclear Equipment Fabrication Standards). Demand to increase installed capacity of nuclear power, a type of clean energy, has continuously grown with enhanced output of existing and newly built reactors. Meanwhile, residual life evaluation of nuclear and thermal plants, their residual life generally considered to be 30 to 60 years, is now an international issue. In this situation, renewable energy has been gathering attention to cope with resource depletion, global warming, and need for energy self-sufficiency, and wind power generation is rapidly increasing.

KMTL employs testing methods in accordance with EN (European Standards), ASTM、JIS (ISO) and other standards for various materials used under elevated temperature and high pressure, and plays an important role in maintaining safety and reliability of nuclear/thermal/wind-power plants.

Medical industry is expected to grow further, contributed by rapidly developing science and engineering and pharmacy. KMTL, under the Japan’s Pharmaceutical Affairs Law, was approved as a “Medical device manufacturer” in 2002, and obtained “No. 1 type license for marketing business of medical devices” and established the “Quality control system based on QMS” in 2007 to develop the jawbone-extension system, F1-MAX”.

Our tests for medical materials and components, based on the standards including JIS and ASTM and Guidelines for evaluation of medical devices, strongly support customers applying for license and approval from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW). We also respond to inquiries for testing to FDA guidelines with the confidence from internationally-oriented customers.
